You may have noticed the picture of a dog in the bottom right corner of our packaging. That is Dexter, the inspiration for Doganic.
On Christmas 2020, our dog Dexter had a seizure. It was a terrifying experience that we wouldn't wish on anyone. The vet ran tests to determine the cause of the seizure and discovered that Dexter's kidneys were not functioning properly.
After doing research on kidney disease and how to treat it, we learned that one of the most important things to be aware of is what you eat. The food we served to Dexter has to be low in protein and sodium. While meat is a convenient protein source and dogs generally enjoy it, we must be cautious about the type of meat Dexter consumes, as certain meats are high in protein.
Additionally, we need to pay attention to the salt content in his food, as salt is rich in sodium and is often used to enhance flavor. Dexter's kidney disease prompted us to improve our treats. We've always made them organic and natural, but we used eggs for protein and salt for flavor. However, we have eliminated these two ingredients from the treats.. We eventually created a treat that was low in protein, potassium, and salt, while still tasting good.
We can confidently say that our treats are safe for dogs with kidney disease to consume*.
Dexter's ultimate favorite turned out to be the apple treat.
* We do not have a veterinarian's written statement for this. Always consult with your veterinarian before giving your dog with kidney disease any food or treat. Our non-meat treats were presented to our veterinarian, who approved their use for Dexter.
